Our Why

It is estimated that approximately 20 veterans commit suicide every day.  Toka’s Friends is committed to reducing that number, one veteran at a time.  Unfortunately, the Veterans Administration does not cover the cost of a service dog for veterans suffering from PTSD or TBI.  Toka’s Friends firmly believes that service dogs can and do save lives.

Our Approach

Our dogs are raised and trained in a home environment with a professional dog trainer from 8 weeks of age until placement with a veteran.  We feel that by not using puppy raisers for the first year we are able to produce very high-quality service dogs. We take great care in determining which dog is most appropriate for each veteran, maximizing the experience for both the veteran and the dog.

Our Difference

We value the long-term relationships that are formed with the veterans throughout the placement process and beyond. This includes extensive one-on-one Team Building with the dog, peer-to-peer support among the veterans, ongoing interaction between the veteran and everyone at Toka’s Friends.
